Trees Planted in the 2000s Are Now the Problem

Tree Removal in 4S Ranch is a newer-neighborhood story. Housing here only began in the early 2000s and was finished in 2014, giving at least 4,700 homes on about 2,900 acres. The trees that went in with those homes were mostly fast growers, and twenty years is enough for a nursery tree to reach the second-story eaves, push roots under a side yard path and shade out every plant beneath it. A lot of the calls we get here are from owners who like their tree but cannot live with where it is.

Not in the City of San Diego

4S Ranch sits just outside San Diego's city limits as an unincorporated, master-planned community, bordered by Rancho Bernardo to the east, Black Mountain Ranch to the west and Rancho Peñasquitos to the south. That matters for trees along the street. In unincorporated areas, work on a tree in the County road right-of-way needs a County tree permit. There is no fee, but the County says to allow about two weeks for a field review. Inside your lot, the HOA's landscape rules are usually the bigger question.

What is under the yard

The ground here is varied. The community sits on Jurassic Santiago Peak Volcanics, Tertiary Stadium conglomerate and slope wash alluvium, and the terrain runs from flat mesas to steep hillsides, from about 300 to 1,150 feet in elevation. On hard, rocky ground, tree roots spread wide and shallow rather than deep, which is part of why trees on graded pads can tip in a saturated winter. On slopes, we leave stumps and roots in place where they help hold the soil unless you need the area cleared.

A history with eucalyptus

Long before the subdivisions, this was ranch land with eucalyptus and citrus groves. Grass fires in 1944 and 1981 burned large parts of those original groves. More recently, the Bernardo Fire started on May 13, 2014 near 4S Ranch and burned 1,548 acres without significant property losses. Brush and trees on the open-space edges are still the main fire concern for homes that back onto canyons.

Jobs we quote often here

  • Removing a fast-growing tree planted too close to the house
  • Replacing a row of trees that has outgrown a narrow side yard
  • Grinding stumps so pavers or turf can go in
  • Clearing dead trees and low limbs along the back fence where the lot meets open space
  • Pruning young street-facing trees into a good structure before they become removal jobs

Removing and replacing

If you want to keep the shade but not the problem, the usual plan is to remove the tree, grind the stump below grade, and replant something smaller and slower farther from the foundation. If your HOA has an approved plant list, bring it to the estimate and we will work around it.

4S Ranch Questions

Is 4S Ranch part of the City of San Diego?

No. It is an unincorporated community just outside the city limits, so County rules apply to trees in the road right-of-way, and your HOA's rules apply inside the community.

Can you get a tree out through a narrow side yard?

Yes. Most 4S Ranch backyards are only reachable through a side gate, so we cut the tree into pieces that fit and carry or roll them out. If the gate is too narrow for a stump grinder, we will tell you up front.

Why do trees here seem to fall over in wet winters?

Hard, rocky ground and compacted graded pads push roots to spread shallow. When the soil is saturated, a tall tree with a shallow root plate can tip. A tree that has started to lean after rain should be looked at quickly.

Do I need HOA approval to remove a front-yard tree?

Often. Check with your association before removing or replacing trees visible from the street.
