From Land Grant to Suburb

Tree Removal in Rancho Peñasquitos takes place on land with a long record. In 1823 Captain Francisco María Ruiz received one league, 4,243 acres, here as the first Mexican land grant in San Diego County. The ranch ran until 1962, when Irvin Kahn bought a 14,000-acre parcel to build a planned community, and San Diego annexed most of the area in 1964. The neighborhoods that followed were planted with the shade trees of their time, and many of those are now at or past the size their yards can handle.

A family neighborhood with busy yards

The 2010 census counted 51,536 residents and 17,009 households here, averaging about three people per household, and 43.6% of households had children. Yards in PQ are used hard: play structures, pools, side-yard storage and patios all sit under or near trees. When a big limb drops or roots buckle a patio, the tree becomes a safety question as much as a landscaping one.

Street trees follow city rules

Rancho Peñasquitos is part of the City of San Diego. Street trees in the public right-of-way are covered by the city's no-fee Street Tree Permit, approved by the Transportation Department, for pruning or planting, while requests to remove a street tree go through the Get It Done app. The City Arborist can be reached at (619) 527-8037. The permit form notes that the adjacent property owner is responsible for watering and maintaining a permitted street tree. HOAs in some PQ neighborhoods may have their own rules on top of that.

Canyon edges and open space

The community borders Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve on the south, with hiking, biking and equestrian trails, and Black Mountain, at about 1,500 feet, rises in Black Mountain Open Space Park to the north. Homes that back onto canyon or open-space slopes often have eucalyptus or pines at the back fence and native brush beyond it. Tree work there stays on the private side of the line, with wood lowered by rope rather than dropped down the slope.

Getting a tree out of a PQ backyard

Most backyards here are only reachable through a side gate. That means:

  • Cutting wood into pieces that can be carried or wheeled out
  • Checking gate width before bringing a stump grinder
  • Protecting side-yard paths, AC units and fences
  • Lowering sections with ropes when the tree is near the house or pool

These details drive the price more than tree height does, which is why we look before we quote.

Fire season reminders

San Diego Fire-Rescue Station 40 on Salmon River Road serves the community. Canyon-edge homes in San Diego have to think about fire like their neighbors in the county do: dead trees near the house, dry palm skirts, and limbs over the roof are the first things to clear before fall.

Rancho Peñasquitos Questions

How do I get the city to remove a street tree in Rancho Peñasquitos?

Submit a removal request through the City of San Diego's Get It Done app. Pruning or planting a street tree uses the no-fee Street Tree Permit. The City Arborist is at (619) 527-8037.

Can you remove a tree at the back of a canyon lot?

Yes, on your property. We take it down in sections and keep wood and debris out of the canyon. If there is an open-space easement on your lot, check its terms first.

Will a stump grinder fit through my side gate?

Many will fit a standard gate. If yours is narrow, we will tell you during the estimate and plan around it.

Do I need HOA approval?

Some PQ neighborhoods have HOAs with landscape rules. Check your CC&Rs before removing trees visible from the street.
