Dead Wood Gets Harder to Remove Every Month
Dead and hazard tree removal is a different job from taking down a healthy tree. In Escondido's heat, a tree that dies in spring can be bone-dry and brittle by fall, and dry limbs snap without warning under a climber's weight or a gust of Santa Ana wind. The longer a dead tree stands, the more of it has to be taken down with a lift instead of a climber, and the more care it takes to lower each piece. Removing a declining tree early is usually safer and cheaper than waiting until it is fully dead.
What kills trees here
Drought is the background to most of it. Escondido averages about 15 inches of rain a year, and its driest recent rain year, 2013 to 2014, brought only 5.75 inches. Trees weakened by dry years are easier targets for insects and disease. Two pests matter most in this part of San Diego County. The goldspotted oak borer attacks coast live oaks, California black oaks and canyon live oaks; UC IPM says trees about 18 inches across and larger are the most likely to be killed. The invasive shot hole borer, which in San Diego County is the Kuroshio shot hole borer, carries a fungus that kills branches and whole trees in hosts including avocado, California sycamore, box elder, willow and coast live oak.
Signs a tree may be a hazard
- Dead or leafless sections at the top of the crown, or the whole crown thinning at once
- Small D-shaped exit holes and dark wet stains or red sap on an oak trunk
- Dark stains, sugary crusts or tiny round holes on avocado, sycamore or box elder bark
- Cracks in the trunk or a split where two stems meet
- Mushrooms, conks or soft wood at the base
- A new lean with soil lifted or cracked on the opposite side
- Woodpeckers stripping bark from one tree more than others
Handling infested wood
Where borers are involved, what happens to the wood matters as much as the cut. UC IPM advises against moving oak wood from goldspotted oak borer-infested trees: season it on site for two years, cover it with clear, sealed plastic tarps of at least 6 mil in full sun for two years, or grind it, and cut stumps flush because larvae can survive in them. UC guidance for shot hole borer is to chip infested wood to pieces smaller than 1 inch and to clean pruning tools between trees. We plan the cleanup around those steps instead of hauling infested logs across the county.
What This Covers
Removal of trees that are dead, dying or structurally unsound, and safe handling of the wood.
Beetle-killed oaks
Oaks badly hit by goldspotted oak borer, removed with stumps cut flush and wood kept on site or ground.
Drought-killed pines and ornamentals
Dry, brittle trees lowered carefully, often from a lift rather than by climbing.
Shot hole borer hosts
Dying avocado, sycamore and box elder taken down with wood chipped small.
Cracked and split trees
Trees with failing forks or trunk cracks removed before the next wind.
Leaning and root-lifted trees
Trees whose root plate has moved, taken down before they finish falling.
Decayed trunks
Trees with rot or fungus at the base, where the strength of the wood cannot be trusted.

Published ranges, not our prices. Sources: This Old House Escondido cost data and HomeAdvisor's national tree removal and arborist guides (2026). Dead wood that cannot be climbed safely often needs a lift, which adds cost. Our on-site estimate is free; your written estimate is the price.
What to Expect
1. Look closely
We check the trunk, base and crown for decay, cracks, borer holes and stains, and what the tree would hit.
2. Decide on method
Climb, lift or fell, depending on how sound the wood is and what is underneath.
3. Written quote
Including how infested wood will be handled: kept on site, tarped, ground or chipped.
4. Remove
Pieces lowered carefully; brittle limbs are never trusted to hold weight.
5. Wood and stump
Oak stumps cut flush; wood handled as UC guidance advises for the pest involved.

Dead & Hazard Tree Removal Questions
Is a dead tree more expensive to remove than a live one?
Often, yes. Dead wood breaks unpredictably, so climbing takes longer and some trees need a lift instead. Removing a tree while it is still declining rather than fully dead usually keeps the cost and risk down.
Can a tree with goldspotted oak borer be saved?
Sometimes. UC IPM says very severely infested trees, with heavy crown thinning and more than 100 exit holes, likely cannot be saved, while UC IPM says treatments are generally more useful for protecting healthier trees than saving heavily infested ones. We tell you which side of that line your tree looks to be on.
Can I keep the oak wood for firewood?
You can keep it on your property. UC IPM says wood cut and seasoned on site for two years should be free of live beetles. What you should not do is move fresh oak firewood from an infested tree to other areas, since that is how the beetle reached San Diego County.
Do I need a permit to remove a dead oak in Escondido?
Escondido's zoning code covers mature oaks of 4 inches and up and protected oaks of 10 inches and up, mostly in connection with grading and development. A dead or hazardous oak is a common reason for removal, but check with the Planning Division before cutting a large oak; we will help you describe its condition.
My neighbor's dead tree hangs over my house. What can I do?
Talk with your neighbor first and put the concern in writing. We can give either of you an estimate, and a written description of the tree's condition can help the conversation.
