Getting Rid of What the Tree Left Behind

Stump grinding and removal finishes the job a tree removal starts. A stump left in an Escondido yard is more than an eyesore: eucalyptus and some other trees can sprout back from the stump, old grove stumps get in the way of new landscaping and irrigation, and a stump in a gravel or drought-tolerant front yard is a tripping hazard that shows. Grinding chews the stump into chips with a rotating cutting wheel, down below the soil surface, so the area can be covered and replanted.

Grinding or full removal

Grinding is the usual choice. It takes the stump and the top of the main roots down below grade, typically in an hour or two for an average stump, and leaves the deeper roots to break down on their own. Full extraction digs out the stump and its main roots, which matters if you are pouring a slab, building a wall footing or putting in a pool. HomeAdvisor puts full extraction at about $200 to $700, compared with about $150 to $500 for grinding.

Oak and borer stumps

Stumps from oaks killed by goldspotted oak borer need extra care. UC IPM notes that larvae can survive in stumps for at least a year, which is why it recommends cutting infested oaks flush to the ground. Grinding a stump down helps, and UC IPM says grinding infested wood to a fine standard destroys all life stages, ideally in the October to April window before adults emerge. We keep chips from infested stumps on site rather than hauling them to other oak areas.

Before we grind

Escondido yards hide a lot in the top foot of soil: drip lines, sprinkler pipes, low-voltage lighting, and sometimes gas, water or electric service lines. Before grinding, utilities should be marked through 811, and we ask you to point out irrigation and lighting near the stump. Decomposed granite and rocky soil wear a grinder fast and can throw stones, so the area is screened and people and pets are kept back.

Stump Grinding & Removal Questions

How deep do you grind a stump?

Typically several inches below the soil surface, which is enough for sod, mulch or gravel. If you plan to replant a tree in the same spot or build over it, tell us and we will go deeper or recommend full extraction.

Will the stump grow back?

Some trees, including eucalyptus, can sprout from a cut stump. Grinding the stump below grade removes the part that sprouts in most cases; any shoots that appear later from roots can be cut back until the roots die.

Can I plant a new tree where the stump was?

Yes, but it helps to move the planting spot a few feet over or to remove the chips and add fresh soil, since decaying roots and wood chips are a poor place for a new tree to start.

Do you grind stumps left from someone else's removal?

Yes. Old stumps are a common job, and they are often harder than fresh ones because they have dried out. Just tell us roughly how wide they are and send a photo.

What do I do with oak stumps from a beetle-killed tree?

Grind them or cut them flush, and keep the chips and wood on your property. UC IPM notes that larvae can live in stumps for at least a year and that moving infested wood is the main way the beetle spreads.
