A Neighborhood Built All at Once

Tree Removal in Carmel Mountain Ranch reflects how fast the place was built. Development began in the 1970s, the 1981 Rancho Carmel Community Plan proposed about 7,185 homes, and by 1999 Carmel Mountain Road, Ted Williams Parkway and Camino del Norte were finished along with nearly 5,000 homes. When a whole community is planted within a few years, its trees age together. Many of those original yard and slope trees are now 25 to 40 years old, and they are reaching sizes that small tract lots were never designed for.

Where it sits

Carmel Mountain Ranch covers 1,489 acres in northeastern San Diego, bordered by Poway to the east, Rancho Bernardo to the north, Rancho Peñasquitos to the west and Sabre Springs to the south, with I-15 along its western edge. The name comes from the Carmelite Sisters of Mercy, who set up a dairy farm and prayer center here in 1905.

The golf course that became housing

The Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club closed in 2018, and after a community debate over rezoning, much of its land was developed in the years that followed. For homes that once backed onto fairways, that meant new neighbors, new grading and in some cases root disturbance to trees near shared property lines. If construction happened close to your trees, watch for thinning crowns or dead limbs over the next few seasons; root damage often shows up slowly.

City of San Diego rules

Carmel Mountain Ranch is part of the City of San Diego. Street trees in the public right-of-way are handled through the city: pruning and planting need a no-fee Street Tree Permit approved by the Transportation Department, and removal requests go through Get It Done. The City Arborist's line is (619) 527-8037. Many neighborhoods here also have HOAs with landscape rules, so check both before removing a tree near the street.

Common jobs in CMR

  • Front-yard trees lifting driveways and sidewalks. Removal plus stump and root grinding near the hardscape is the usual fix.
  • Backyard trees over roofs and patios. In small yards, climbers take trees down in pieces and carry them out through the side gate.
  • Slope trees. Trees on the slopes between terraced lots are lowered by rope so nothing rolls into the neighbor's yard.
  • Replacements. After removal, a smaller species farther from the house is often the better long-term choice.

Ask before you cut

If the tree is near a shared fence, talk to your neighbor first. California law generally treats a tree whose trunk stands on the line as belonging to both owners, and disputes over cutting are easier to avoid than to settle. We can meet both neighbors on site and write the estimate to show exactly what will be removed.

Carmel Mountain Ranch Questions

Who removes a dead street tree in Carmel Mountain Ranch?

If it is a City of San Diego street tree, request removal through Get It Done. The City Arborist at (619) 527-8037 can confirm whether it is a city tree.

My tree's roots are lifting the driveway. Can roots be cut instead?

Sometimes, but cutting large roots close to the trunk can make a tree unstable. We look at root size and location and tell you honestly whether root pruning is safe or removal is better.

Can you get a tree out of a small backyard with no side access?

Usually, yes. Wood is cut into manageable pieces and carried out. If there is truly no access, we will discuss options during the estimate.

Do I need HOA approval?

Many CMR neighborhoods have HOAs with landscape rules, especially for front yards. Check before removing or replacing a tree.
