The Eucalyptus Neighborhood

Tree Removal in Scripps Ranch is mostly about eucalyptus. E.W. Scripps came to California in 1890 and built his hilltop home, Miramar, on what was then a barren, dry hill about 16 miles from town; the estate grounds were planted with citrus, pine and eucalyptus, and some of the original trees still stand at the Scripps Ranch Swim and Racquet Club. Today mature eucalyptus are the neighborhood's signature, most visible along Pomerado Road, and many homes have them in the yard or right behind the fence.

The Cedar Fire

In October 2003 the Cedar Fire devastated south Scripps Ranch and destroyed more than 300 homes. Every conversation about trees here happens with that in the background. Residents have pushed for more attention to the eucalyptus: in a July 2026 ABC 10News report, homeowners along Pomerado Road described dry brush and dead branches building up under trees that stand on a mix of city, private and state land. The city told the station it evaluates those trees every two to three years and had pruned or removed more than 600 trees in the area over the past five years. One resident said her home had recently been placed in a High Fire Hazard Severity Zone.

When eucalyptus come down

Eucalyptus are not all hazards, but large ones near homes need regular checks. They drop heavy limbs, sometimes on calm summer days, shed large amounts of bark that builds into fuel, and can fail at weak forks. When a condominium community in Scripps Ranch began removing eucalyptus in 2010, NBC San Diego reported that more than half a dozen trees had fallen in the previous months and one had crashed into a unit, though residents disputed how many needed to come down. The lesson: assess tree by tree, not by blanket rule.

How a eucalyptus removal near a house works

1. We look at lean, forks, decay and what the tree can reach. 2. If it is coming down, climbers or a crane take it apart from the top in sections. 3. Each piece is lowered on ropes into a clear area; nothing is dropped near the roof. 4. Wood is chipped or cut and hauled; bark and leaf litter are raked up. 5. The stump is ground if you want to replant.

Public, private or state?

Scripps Ranch is in the City of San Diego. If a tree is a city street tree, removal requests go through the Get It Done app, and pruning or planting needs the city's no-fee Street Tree Permit. Trees in the Pomerado Road corridor are on mixed ownership, so before work on any tree near a public road, confirm who owns it. Report hazards on public trees through Get It Done.

Lake Miramar side

Miramar Reservoir sits within Scripps Ranch, and homes near the lake and its slopes have the same eucalyptus and pine mix plus native brush. Lots there often have steep backyards, which adds rigging and carrying to the job.

Scripps Ranch Questions

Should I remove the eucalyptus behind my Scripps Ranch home?

Not automatically. It depends on the tree's condition and what it can reach. Trees with weak forks, decay, heavy lean or a history of dropping limbs over a house deserve a close look. Healthy trees can often be pruned and cleaned up instead.

Who maintains the eucalyptus along Pomerado Road?

Ownership is mixed among the city, private owners and the state. Report hazards on public trees through Get It Done, and confirm ownership before any work on trees near the road.

Does eucalyptus bark really matter for fire?

Yes. Shed bark and leaves pile up quickly and burn readily. Raking litter away from homes and fences, and keeping it off roofs and out of gutters, is part of fire-season prep here.

Can you remove a big eucalyptus without a crane?

Many can be taken down by climbers with rigging. A crane is sometimes the safest and quickest choice for a very large tree over a house, and we will say so in the estimate.
